Our Story
Founded in 2017, Backyard Apiaries was established with the mission of bringing the joy of having honey bees to individuals who may not be seasoned beekeepers.
Our services cater to both private individuals and corporate clients within Montgomery, Howard, Anne Arundel, and Prince Georges counties in Maryland. We prioritize the well-being of your bee colonies through the use of best management practices and performing health evaluations, assuring the utmost vitality of your hives. Additionally, we are always happy to educate our clients and keep them up to date on the health and status of their bees.
Meet the Beekeeper
ERIC MALCOLM
Owner/Beekeeper
Born and raised in Silver Spring, MD, I started Backyard Apiaries out of my backyard while I was a stay-at-home Dad. After becoming completely mesmerized by the world of Honey bees, they quickly became my passion. I wanted to share my joy and fascination with others while always striving to grow my beekeeping knowledge.
My career in bee health includes working with a national nonprofit, Bee Informed Partnership, and the University of Maryland Bee Lab, where I consider myself very fortunate to work with such an amazing team of experts in the field of honey bees.
I have served as Vice President and President of the Montgomery County Beekeepers Association from 2020 to 2022. I am a member of the Maryland State Beekeepers Association, Howard County Beekeepers Association, Montgomery County Beekeepers Association, COLOSS, Eastern Apiculture Society, and American Beekeeping Federation.
